We've Got a New Look

You may have noticed that our library is getting some TLC these days and it's really making a difference in how it looks. Led by Trustee President Eileen Eastman and volunteer Mary Fisher,  a team of volunteers, neighbors, Harwich Tech students, and friends have worked together and individually to power wash, paint, repair, weed, trim, and landscape giving us a well deserved face lift!  THANK YOU to all of you.  If anyone would like to join the team, we've got lots more to do!  And, keep watching...there's more to come!                                   1/29/2014

Straight from the heart: Non-profit offers free yoga at West Dennis Library

Bringing peace and a sense of well being to others is Jenny Ravikumar’s mission.

“I started yoga at age 20 because my mom tried it to help ease the pain of severe arthritis in her back, and I wanted to be there to support her,” says Ravikumar. When her mom’s teacher didn’t offer what Ravikumar was seeking for herself, she tried another instructor who incorporated the spiritual with the physical. “I really connected with that,” she says.

Keeping West Dennis Safe

Crime Watch group gains momentum  WEST DENNIS — Personal safety is key.

That’s the message Dennis Police Chief Mike Whalen delivered to close to 40 West Dennis residents at last week’s Crime Watch meeting at West Dennis Library.

Whalen said the police department will support the group for as long as it wants to meet at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. He said West Dennis has been “pretty quiet” lately and that burglaries have waned.

Over the past few weeks, Whalen has visited several Dennis shops that advertise cash for gold and silver. “It’s easy for someone to break into your house, pawn your things, and a few days later it’s melted down,” he said. “We’re cracking down on businesses that buy gold and silver.”

People of all ages and abilities are invited to attend free yoga classes from 10 to 11 a.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month at West Dennis Library, 260 Main St., West Dennis. Classes are courtesy of Journey to Hope, which provides free, accessible yoga to communities across Cape Cod.

Puppy love: Children read to dogs at West Dennis Library

Kids and dogs will get together at West Dennis Library this summer to – wait for it – read together.

Reading with Ruby and Friends debuted June 10, and will return five more times over the summer. “If the program remains popular, I’d like to continue it through the school year,” said library director Jennie Wiley. Eight children participated in the first session.

Ruby, an Irish setter, is the main therapy dog in the program that takes specially trained canines to schools, hospitals, nursing homes — and now libraries — to work their magic. “Research has shown that the most reluctant readers enjoy reading with the non-judgmental dogs, who sit quietly listening, with their handlers always close by,” Wiley said. “Children can pet the dogs without fear of being bitten or growled at and read without fear of making a mistake.”
