Straight from the heart: Non-profit offers free yoga at West Dennis Library

Bringing peace and a sense of well being to others is Jenny Ravikumar’s mission.

“I started yoga at age 20 because my mom tried it to help ease the pain of severe arthritis in her back, and I wanted to be there to support her,” says Ravikumar. When her mom’s teacher didn’t offer what Ravikumar was seeking for herself, she tried another instructor who incorporated the spiritual with the physical. “I really connected with that,” she says.

As a private library with minimal town funding, West Dennis Library depends on its patrons for support. Lately, friends of the library have been stepping up in significant ways.

Keeping West Dennis safe

Crime Watch group gains momentum  WEST DENNIS — Personal safety is key.

That’s the message Dennis Police Chief Mike Whalen delivered to close to 40 West Dennis residents at last week’s Crime Watch meeting at West Dennis Library.

Whalen said the police department will support the group for as long as it wants to meet at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. He said West Dennis has been “pretty quiet” lately and that burglaries have waned.

Over the past few weeks, Whalen has visited several Dennis shops that advertise cash for gold and silver. “It’s easy for someone to break into your house, pawn your things, and a few days later it’s melted down,” he said. “We’re cracking down on businesses that buy gold and silver.”

People of all ages and abilities are invited to attend free yoga classes from 10 to 11 a.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month at West Dennis Library, 260 Main St., West Dennis. Classes are courtesy of Journey to Hope, which provides free, accessible yoga to communities across Cape Cod.

Puppy love: Children read to dogs at West Dennis Library

Kids and dogs will get together at West Dennis Library this summer to – wait for it – read together.

Reading with Ruby and Friends debuted June 10, and will return five more times over the summer. “If the program remains popular, I’d like to continue it through the school year,” said library director Jennie Wiley. Eight children participated in the first session.

Ruby, an Irish setter, is the main therapy dog in the program that takes specially trained canines to schools, hospitals, nursing homes — and now libraries — to work their magic. “Research has shown that the most reluctant readers enjoy reading with the non-judgmental dogs, who sit quietly listening, with their handlers always close by,” Wiley said. “Children can pet the dogs without fear of being bitten or growled at and read without fear of making a mistake.”

Meet Jennie Wiley, new librarian in West Dennis

Harrisburg, Pa. native Jennie Wiley made a number of stops before planting her roots in Sandwich three years ago. A graduate of Vermont College in Montpelier, Wiley lived and worked in Delaware before being hired in 2009 to fill in for Cape Cod Regional Technical High School’s librarian.

Since last September, Wiley has assisted the Tech librarian while working on her master’s degree in library science. She was recently hired as the librarian at West Dennis Library and starts there Monday, March 7.

“I’ve always believed the library is the heart of a community,” Wiley said. “As soon as people walk through the door, there should be someone who can answer their questions and help them find what they need. I also believe in offering plenty of free programs, so people have lots of opportunities to learn something new.”

BRICK BY BRICK: WEST DENNIS LIBRARY SEEKS FINANCIAL HELP TO STAY ALIVE

WEST DENNIS —

While other Cape towns might envy Dennis’ unique library system, having a library in each of the town’s five villages doesn’t come without its challenges. In the case of the four private libraries, funding is a constant worry.

“We are publicly funded in a very small amount,” said Agnes Chatelain, chairwoman of the West Dennis Library’s board of trustees. “This is our 90th year, and we have to really hustle to get the funding to stay open.” Over the past three years, circulation at West Dennis Library has increased at least 30 percent, Chatelain said. “Now, we are facing a financial crisis.”

In 2009, the library’s expenses totaled $102,000. Of that, approximately $36,000 came from the town. “Our current goal is to raise about $75,000 annually in addition to what we receive from the town,” Chatelain said.

What’s not reflected in the budget are the services volunteers contribute to the library. “Without the hours of time our volunteers provide, we couldn’t provide the services that we do,” Chatelain said. “We are extremely grateful to them.”
